In order to do PhD, one needs to be graduated from the universities’ master’s degree with thesis, ones who graduated from master’s degree without thesis cannot apply to the PhD programme (apart from those who registered or graduated before 06.02.2013). Master’s graduate can apply to the integrated PhD programs, cannot apply to PhD programs without graduating from master’s degree with thesis.
What Is Integrated PhD?
Integrated PhD is a type of PhD that enables bachelor’s degrees to start the PhD without thesis master’s degree. In our country, not every department has integrated PhD, they are very low in number. Integrated PhD duration is usually 5 years.
Process of Phd
At the PhD education, the candidate, after 2 periods (1 year) takes the exam of doctoral proficiency examination. If the proficiency examination is passed well, the candidate starts the thesis period, in case of failiure, additional time is given to candidate and he is asked to prepare for the next proficiency exam. After three proficiency exams, the candidate who failed starts the education process from the beginning.
After the proficiency exam, candidate takes the thesis period. At normal conditions, it is 3 years. At this point, thesis is considered thoroughly by committees.
Candidate who finishes his thesis enters the thesis defense and if he can defense it right, he graduates. In case of failure, he gets prepared for the next defense.
PhD Degree
PhD Degree is the sign that person has enough profession on his branch. Those who finish PhD successful gets the title of “Doctor(Dr.)” This title is given by Board of Higher Education.
This title is given to the ones who takes PhD in education field. Medical title of Doctor is different.
Doctor title belongs to the person, it is not necessary to work in higher education boards to use.
After PhD
Candidate who finishes his PhD education and gets the Doctor title can apply to assistant professor position. Candidate who settles for assistant professor gets the title of Assist. Prof. This is a position title.
As long as the person works at the institution he can use the Assist. Prof. title. Otherwise, he can also apply for lower positions like research assistant and academic.
PhD graduated candidate can also find a work in private sector, in the private sector especially for higher positions the PhD graduation will have a positive sign.
